On May 2, the unveiling of the Melbourne Korean War Memorial took place in Footscray. Representatives of Korean War veteran committees, local politicians and both government and diplomatic officials of the Republic of Korea gave welcoming and congratulatory speeches.
The Korean Ambassador H.E. Baek Soon Lee and Consul-General in Melbourne Mr. Sunghyo Kim, were joined by the Republic of Korea’s Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs H.E. Woo Jin Pi and the Mayor of Gapyeon County: Mr. Seong-gi Kim. Local Victorian officials present included: former state Premier Hon. Ted Ballieu, current state Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Hon. Robin Scott and Mayor of Marybinong, Martin Zakharov. Both official delegations were accompanied by the Korean Veterans’ Association of Australia President: Mr. Tom Parkinson.
