Commemoration of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux

On 24 April at 11:00 am, the Friends of the 15th Brigade will lay a wreath at the Shrine of Remembrance  to commemorate  the Battle of Villers Bretonneux. The ceremony will last about 6 minutes and will be live-streamed. You are invited to join the live-stream on: https://www.facebook.com/shrineofremembrance/

That commemoration marks the successful counterattack and recapture of Villers Bretonneux on the night of the 24th to the 25th of April 1918. This action played a significant role in the overall defeat of the Germans forces during WW1.

The Australian 15th Brigade, which suffered dreadfully in the ANZAC’s first major action on the Western Front at Fromelles, together with the 13th Brigade, were instrumental in this action.

Villers Bretonneux is today the main Australian site of commemoration in France. And the people of Villers-Bretonneux, as per the sign that ornates many buildings in their village, “have never forgotten Australia”!
