In the Memory of Jacques Pottier

It is with sadness that we learned that Jacques Pottier passed away on Sunday 3 September 2023. He was 93 years old.

Mr. Pottier was a famous principal tenor at the Opera de Paris. During his career he taught the best French and francophone singers such as Dalida, Sheila, Nicole Croisille, Mireille Mathieu and many more [Gabriel Gâté as well!] In 1983, he retired to Melbourne where he taught singing at Carey Baptist Grammar School, Melbourne Girls Grammar School and at Melbourne University’s Music Conservatory.

In 1998, Jacques Pottier was awarded the French national honour Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

The Melbourne consular team remembers his regular visits to have his certificate of life signed : he often  took the opportunity to show off his singing skills to the greatest surprise of our interns!

We present our deepest condolences to his relatives and friends. May he Rest In Peace.

A requiem mass will be held in his memory at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 49 Nicholson Street,  Brunswick East on Friday 15 September at 11am. The burial will follow at 12.30 pm at Fawkner Park-North Memorial Park, grave site 98.

Knight of Arts and Letters – with his friend Gabriel Gâté and Consul General Rollon Mouchel-Blaisot.
