Update on travel between France and Australia

  • The borders of France are open to travellers arriving from Australia. All updated information concerning this matter can be found here

From 18 January 2021 travellers must show a negative test result for Covid-19 PCR and self-isolate for 7 days upon their arrival in France.

French citizens who reside in Australia, must verify beforehand that they are able to leave Australia, or return, according to their visa status (dual citizen, perminant resident, holder of a temporary visa)

The rules regarding visa for those of foreign nationality apply:

  • If the status and length of your foreseen stay allows you to travel to France without visa, this remains the case
  • For more information on visas, please refer to this article.

Travellers must provide a signed and completed certificate downloadable here.

Different airlines are currently flighting to France from Australia on a regular basis. We recommend that you consult the websites of Australia’s international airports (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane…) as well as the websites of the airlines which flight out of these airports.

The situation of the global pandemic is constantly evolving, it is advised to check transit conditions in stop-over countries of your journey: https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/ ; chose a country then consult the rubric « dernière minute » and « entrée/séjour » (only available in French).

  • The Australian borders remain closed to foreigners who are not permanent residents.

Franco-Australian dual nationals and French permanent residents of Australia, in principle are not authorised to leave Australia: reasons for travel must be imperative or travellers must be leaving Australia perminantly. Travellers must first ask for an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs: Travel restriction exemptions.

French nationals who reside in Australia holding a temporary visa do not need authorisation from the Department of Home Affairs to leave Australia. Conversely, they will only be able to return to Australia with an exemption. The terms for obtaining this exemption can be found here:  https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/…
